Desde el país más oriental, de la península de Indochina en Asia del sur, al barrio de Belgrano, en la Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires; tuvimos el honor de visitar en su embajada a la esposa del Embajador de la República Socialista de Vietnam, S.E. Thao NGUYEN DINH, la Sra. Huong TRAN THI MAI.
Su cándida sonrisa y amabilidad me llevó inmediatamente a las tierras bajas, colinas y densamente arboladas tierras altas de su país; mientras ella entusiasmada nos presentaba la ropa tradicional de su madre patria.
Ao Dai (vestido largo) es un vestido tradicional de Vietnam, también es un símbolo vietnamita. El nombre se aplica para hombre y mujer. Cuando escuche sobre Vietnam, definitivamente va a escuchar sobre Ao Dai. Hoy, Ao Dai es muy popular con diferentes diseños y colores.
Diferente del kimono (Japón) o hanbok (Corea), el Ao Dai se usa en muchas ocasiones. Ao Dai es ahora una norma en casamientos, celebraciones de Tet (Año Nuevo) y muchas otras ocasiones formales. Se requiere uniforme para las maestras y profesoras (mayormente de nivel secundario hacia abajo) y las alumnas en secundario en el Sur; no hay color o diseño estricto para maestras y profesoras; en tanto las alumnas usan colores lisos como blanco con algunos motivos como flores para uniformes de colegio. Las empresas frecuentemente solicitan al personal femenino que usen uniformes eso incluye el Ao Dai; así que las ayudantes de vuelo, recepcionistas, personal de bancos, restaurantes y hoteles en Vietnam pueden ser vistas usándolo.
Se usa para salir, asistir a desfiles de moda o especialmente en casamientos. Hay una especie de sombrero que va con él: Non La para damas, y para caballeros una especie de sombrero atado o recogido que no cubre completamente la cabeza, y normalmente es negro, puede ser en el mismo color del Ao Dai. Hoy el Non La es un buen presente de Vietnam. Se lo puede encontrar en su versión original que es liso y sencillo o con dibujos y pinturas.
En los casamientos algunas parejas eligen usar vestidos tradicionales para ambos, en otros casos solo la mujer lo usa.
Ao Dai es un diseño único con combinaciones respetuosas y encantadoras. Refleja el cuerpo de la persona que lo lleva, aunque no es totalmente al cuerpo para hombres, pero algo suelto. Es en dos piezas con corte a la cintura, lo que hace que la mujer se mueva fácilmente. La idea es permitir que el vestido se deje llevar por el viento. El material es pura seda, así el cuerpo dentro se siente en materiales nobles, suaves que hacen que la mujer luzca más femenina. Los niños usan el mismo diseño que los adultos.
Como mencionamos antes, el Ao Dai refleja el cuerpo de quien lo lleva, así que cada Ao Dai es a la medida de una persona. No se puede hacer un Ao Dai para mucha gente. Se podría, pero no sería lindo. Cuando se hace un Ao Dai, el sastre o modista lo hace cuidadosamente a medida. Una medida mal destruiría la belleza del Ao Dai.
¿Utilizan otro material que no sea seda vietnamita?
En la actualidad se compran sedas o géneros similares de otros países que se sientan o luzcan como seda que cubra los requerimientos del Ao Dai. Los diseños normalmente reflejan la naturaleza, aunque no es una regla. Hoy en día también es común el uso de bordados y accesorios como piedras o brillos para embellecer el vestido. Esto también influyó en la moda de hoy, así es que los hombres pueden usar un Ao Dai que parezca una camisa, porque son más cortas en el talle. Es similar en damas, lucen un poco más cortas que los vestidos y se usan con pantalones o calzas.
¿En la celebración del Día Nacional se espera ver a los Embajadores y oficiales usar Ao Dai?
Aunque es el vestido nacional, no todos los hombres suelen usarlo en celebraciones; tampoco no todos los novios lo usan en casamientos. Eso depende del hombre. Pero se espera que las mujeres desfilen sus hermosos Ao Dai. Si alguien visita Vietnam y asiste a la celebración del Día Nacional con nuestras vestimentas, nos sentiríamos honrados ya que eso demostraría el amor y respeto de los huéspedes por Vietnam.

Como el Ao Dai es un vestido realmente hermoso, nos preguntamos si hay algún lugar en Buenos Aires para comprarlos, pero desafortunadamente la comunidad vietnamita es muy pequeña y no hay disponibles en la ciudad.

Vietnamese Dress: AO DAI (Áo Dai)

Her candid smile and warmth took me immediately to the tropical lowlands, hills, and densely forested highlands of her country, as she busy explained the traditional clothing of her mother land.
Ao Dai (Long Dress) is a traditional dress in Vietnam, it is also a symbol of Vietnam. The name goes for women and men. Whenever you hear about Vietnam, definitely you will hear about Ao Dai ( áo dài in Vietnamese). Today, Ao Dai is very popular with different designs and colours.
Differently from kimono (Japan) or hanbok (Korea), Ao Dai is wore in many occasions. Ao Dai is now standard for weddings, for celebrating Tết (New Year) and for other formal occasions. It is required uniform for female teacher (mostly from high school to below) and female student in common high school in the South; not strict about colour or pattern for teachers; when students wear plain white with some small patterns like flowers for school uniform. Companies often require their female staff to wear uniforms that include the Ao Dai, so flight attendants, receptionists, bank female staff, restaurant staff, and hotel workers in Vietnam may be seen wearing it.
It is worn to go out or to attend fashion shows or especially in wedding. There is a kind of hat to go with it: Non La for ladies as for men there is a special kind of wrapped up hat not completely covering the head, and usually black, may be in the same colour as the Ao Dai. Today Non La it is a good present from Vietnam. It can be found in its original version, plain and simple or with drawings and paintings.
At weddings some couples chose to wear traditional dress for both, in other cases only women wear it.
Ao Dai is a unique design with both respectful and charming combination. It reflects the body of the person who wears it, although it is not tight-fitting for men but a lot loose. The cut of 2 pieces is at the waist, which makes the women easy to move. The idea is to let the dress fly with the wind. The material is silk, so the body is inside the soft material which make women become more feminine. Kids wear the same designs as adults.
As mentioned before, Ao Dai reflects the body of the one who wears it, so each Ao Dai is just suitable for only one person. We can’t make one Ao Dai for many people. It can be, but it will not be beautiful. When making an Ao Dai, the tailor will take the measurement carefully. One wrong measurement will destroy the beauty of Ao Dai.
We asked the Ambassador if they use other material other than the Vietnamese silk, to which she answered that in modern fashion they buy silk or any similar material from other countries that will feel or look like silk to fit the requirements of an Ao Dai. The patterns normally resemble nature, although this is not a rule. It is also common to see nowadays embroidery and accessories like stones or glitters to beautify the dress. It is also influenced by fashion today, therefore some men can wear an Ao Dai that might look like a shirt as they are shorter in the body length. It is also similar in women, as they might look like a shorter dress worn with trousers or slacks.
We asked if in the celebration of National Day it is expected to see Ambassadors and officers wearing Ao Dai. She explained that although it is the national dress, not every man is used to wear them to celebrations; also not every groom wears one in a wedding. It is up to every man. But it is expected that women would parade their beautiful Ao Dai. She added that if somebody visited Vietnam and attends a National Celebration with their clothing, they feel honoured as that shows the love and respect of the guest for Vietnam.

As the Ao Dai is really a beautiful dress, we wondered if there was a place in Buenos Aires to buy them, but unfortunately the Vietnamese community is very small and they are not available in this city.
